My son is about to graduate HS. My daughter is in 10th grade and we've decided to home school her next year, for various reasons (not religious ones ), including ensuring that she'll actually be prepared for college. If my kids were still little, I don't think I'd be putting them in school past 3rd grade or so. They do pretty well until about then. |

Check out this interview with Laurie David the producer of the film on PBS's NOW
apparently the national association of science teachers wouldn't take 50,000 copies of the DVD provided free of charge to teachers because they get over 6 million dollars a year from oil companies. Hmmmm... http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/304/index.html |

My kids' middle school band director was an absolute genius at putting out a great program that was good music and offended no one. Considering the religious demographics of my kids schools from elementary on up, it really would be pretty silly to have a winter programme that's all Christmas music. Quote:
Most things that could be offensive or off putting are pretty easily remedied if people just sit down and talk like adults, though. If I think something's getting uneven treatment, I'd much rather just go in an talk and see if there isn't some compromise that makes everyone happy. Most times, the people putting the programmes together just never stopped to think what non-Chrsitians would make of them, or what some of the obvious alternatives would be. Making everyone UNhappy is not much of an alternative. I used to be room mom for years. We had Muslims, JWs, Hindus, Christians, Jews, Baha'is, Wiccans, and not religious in the class. I always managed to put on a party that made everyone happy and that didn't cost any more money or effort on my part. It's really not that difficult. Sometimes you might have to call a parent and ask a question. How tough it is to be considerate. ![]() |

This is awful! And I always loved how most of Washington is liberal in the area of the environment. It's the few ones that have don't have a grip on science make the rest of us look bad.
This bothers me a bit, because I grew up about five minutes away from Federal Way. Last edited by Bishka; 01-26-2007 at 11:29 PM. |

Anyone watched Now tonight (Friday) on PBS? The woman made the documentary, Laurie Davis, was interviewed. They tried to GIVE away thousands of copies of this to science teachers thru the National Science Teachers Assoc. (NSTA). They were refused. The reason had nothing to do with science. The reason turned out to be that the board has members who are in big oil. However, the NSTA was quite willing to sell the mailing list of their members.
She is trying to think up a way of funding this so that she can give the DVD to teachers. BTW, the NSTA has taken and shown videos and so on put out by big oil. The current fav is one called "Fuel-less, It isnt' cool without fuel". No kidding. But stated that they are unwilling to distribute films that promote a "special interest". (Our planets survival?!?!) BTW, I have read that many scientists have praised the film and find minor faults with it. That is except for the handful of skeptics. Bush, of course, flatly refuses to see it, instead inviting science fiction writers to discuss global warming with him (Michael Crighton). --des Last edited by des; 01-27-2007 at 12:50 AM. |
