A group of reserchers have discovered a group of giant chimps. (aprox. 2 meters tall) in the remote forests of the DR Congo. Looks like we get a new member to the family tree.
Thus far they are being placed as a sub-species of the Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) most likely the schweinfurthii sub-species. Although there is some question as to wether or not they deserve thier own species. they are at great risk of extinction due to the practice of bushmeat hunting and we may be learning about them too late. some helpful links. a nice 'photo trap' picture of one of the apes. Notice the gorilla like posture rather than the chimp posture. Perhaps an adaptation due to the large size. http://karlammann.com/bondo/chimptrapphoto.html http://karlammann.com/bondo.html#tree http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...trangeape.html enjoy. wa:do |

I figured it would be nice to post about a current science event.
![]() I have to say I'm very excited about this. If it is a new species then we have a new branch on the tree, if not we may be looking at evolution in action. This 'new' ape/chimp has some very interesting features not found in other chimps. Here's hoping we can save them in time to learn more. wa:do |

be clear what you mean by evolution
you mean micro or macro evolution? |

Micro already accounts for the differences between this ape and the common chimpanzee. (should it turn out to be a subspecies) Such as size, posture, flatter face, skull ridge, cultural differences et cet.

so these big monkies that were found in the jungle prove evolution to be fact because they have a bigger size then regular monkies??

ok, first off not monkeys, apes big difference most easily noticed is the absence of a tail.
There is more difference than just the size, as I said difference in posture, skull features and culture make it distinct from any of the other memebers of the Chimpanzee Subspecies. If it is in fact a member of the schweinfurthii sub-species of Chimpanzee than what we have is a radically different group of chimps that may be on thier way to becoming thier own species. This is why we need to study them more, so we can find out just how different they are, do they breed with other (normal) chimps of the schweinfurthii sub-species? If they don't then they may well be placed in thier own species, if not right away then perhaps in a few decades. If they do not breed with other chimp groups than they will continue to develop in thier own direction untill they are no longer chimpanzee anymore. This assuming that they are in fact a member of the schweinfurthii sub-species. If they are not then we can try to figure out how close they are to the schweinfurthii chimps and get an idea of how closely the two species are in relation to one another. But I guess if you want to grossly distort and simplify things than yes, the big monkeys are a good indication that evolution exists because they have a bigger size than the regular monkeys. ![]() wa:do |

My point is that the different shape size and culture of a groupe of apes doesn't prove anything about evolution it just shows differnt shape and size

and what about the changes in the DNA?
How do we define a species? wa:do |

How about we just say Allah created them? If He created birds after He created fish, isn't it possible that He can create a new species of ape after He created the first ape?
Does this make sense at all? ![]() My point is that if He wants to, Allah can do anything.
