What are the top three craziest, most misguided criticisms of science that you routinely hear from the anti-science crowd?
Why are they crazy criticisms?

1) I don't understand...
Take the time and effort to actually learn about what you criticize. 2) It's not in my scripture... Neither is calculus, so I guess that must be invalidated, too. 3) Scientists change their minds... The funny thing about this one, is the fact that so many religions have developed and changed over time. |

1) "Science has made mistakes in the past."
2) "Science can't tell us why we're here." 3) "It's just a theory." |

My favorite is "but scientists can never agree on their theories!" Because everyone knows if everyone doesn't agree with it, it's false...

Science can't tell us why we are here. This should not be a criticism of it, since it never claimed to. Anyway, after quick thought. 1) Science doesn't take feelings into account. 2) Scientists created the H-Bomb! And, my all-time favourite ever: 3) Science is too logical. Those Crazy Scientists! What oafs are they!

1)Science takes all the mystery and beauty out of life. Science has revealed much about the universe and ourselves that we now take for granted. I have noticed that certain spiritual groups have fully embraced a certain conception of quantum theory in order to bolster and sell their own worldview. Can anyone say Ramtha? Fritjof Capra?
2)Science is a faith-based system. Science is not a system of belief or any sort of cosmology. It is a methodological categorization of observations. What this view actually shows is a basic lack of understanding of the scientific method and the history of science in human culture. 3)Last and most ridiculous. Science has put psychics, astrologers, etc. out of business. This last is an actual accusation a coworker expressed to me when he denounced Carl Sagan and his efforts to ruin the careers of spiritualists and the like. This view actually left me speechless. What can I say? Darn those skeptics who use science to expose some frauds and save people from financial loss. I find this last concept usually held of skeptics in general. Of course, there are probably some good "crazy" statements scientists have made in support of their profession. |
