if i remember currectly, in the bible, doesn't it say there was a storm going on? rough seas could account for them not noticing the ice. it might have been easier to see the ice next to the shore. if they went out on the lake before there was any freezing going on, then they might not have seen it happen or noticed it happening. wasn't the walking on water at night too? that would have made it even more difficult to see the ice.
as far as peter walking on the water too, if he were to get out of the boat on a relatively thin piece of ice, or a piece that couldn't support his weight for long, he might appear to actually be standing on the water, but when the ice gave out, he would sink. peter might simply have slipped, because ice is a little slick. jesus could have been on more stable ice, and lifted him up onto it. i know for a fact that you can walk on ice that is merely an inch thick, it can't support very much wieght, but you can walk on it. has anyone ever seen a lake that was in the process of freezing? water in one place can be frozen, while, water in another part of the lake might not be frozen yet. i think that usually the deeper the water, the longer it takes to freeze, i might be wrong though, i haven't paid that much attention to the actual process before. i would love to be able to put a time lapsed video of a lake freezing on here, but cant find one on short notice. so, if anyone knows a link to one, please post it. Here is a passage from the bible that describes this.

Perhaps Jesus should be credited with inventing wind surfing -- with small ice floes.

Well, he did climb a mountain before the apostles set sail. Maybe he hang glided off the mountain and landed on an ice cube in the sea near the apostles . He had ice shoes on so he could stop without falling off the ice cube. Ummmm. On second thought, I don't think so.

even though it's neat to speculate what weather conditions and science can figure out, i think the real question here is if you think that the "walking on water" is metaphoric, or if any portion of the bible is for that matter. if you believe that any portion of the bible is metaphoric then you have to believe that all of it is. you can't have your cake and eat it too. Same thing goes for taking it literally, it's either all or none.
