You are exactly right.
In Christian theology, God exists as the Creator, not as the created. In Revelation, God creates heaven from earthly materials like gold and jewles, creates a new earth, and enables redeemed humanity to live there in paradise. The language is highly symbolic, and Christians are divided as to its literal or metaphorical meaning. I vote for metaphor, but we really won't know until we get there. The main issue is that Christians believe that through Christ they will be in right relationship with God, in His presence in paradise. Location is not important.
