Did ACER go away for awhile and then re-emerge again? After about 6 years after I bought my first computer, I never heard much from them. I bought a reasonable desktop system for my father about two years ago and ACER was the brand that mrscardero and I bought him.

You have my condolences, but I am reasonably sure you will not have too many problemo's. RE: Bargains. There aren't really any bargains per se, as all that exists is perceived value. I am not a big fan of Extended Warranties, but if one is available I would plunk down the change for it. It might be very helpful when the machine begins to "get down and get funky".

In most computer magazines I read, Dell consistantly ranks 2nd behind Apple for reliablity of both their laptops and desktops. I've also never heard of any of my friends having a single problem with a Dell. I've had one problem: the bust CD ROM drive as mentioned above, but that was resolved quickly enough.

Dell Recognized as Most Reliable Laptop and Desktop Manufacturer in North America

This is from 3 years ago, but you get the point. =P

The reason some of us do not like dell is the quality of the laptop itself. I have a Inspiron 6000 and while it has been good to me, I really wish I bought a thinner laptop with a tougher casing. Its too thick and the casing is easily damaged, chipped and cracked.

Inspiron is Dells cheapest line. It's meant to be affordable and functional. if you want some super stylish, slim, light laptop look at the XPS or the new Studio line. XPS is probably the sexiest laptop on the market at the moment, and the Studio looks similar but is a bit cheaper for people who don't want to shell out quite as much.
