I don't get memetics. I would sincerely appreciate it if someone could explain it to me.
Let's start with the very basics: what's the point? What does the concept of a "meme" contribute that "idea" doesn't?

Memetics is the idea that words, phrases, concepts, trends etc. are subject to a sort of social/cultural natural selection. Some words in our culture, for example, have the qualities needed to grow and spread among a population, even change over time. Others die and are no longer used. It is not coincidental that "meme" rhymes with "gene."
