A recent catalog from Sharper Image touted a new blanket with "invisible silver nanoparticles". This cracked me up when I first read it and I mentally gave the marketers high praise for dreaming up such techno-babble. A number of concerns regarding this "technology" popped into my head. Do the nanoparticles shed? What if I am allergic to silver nanparticles? If I am and the invisible silver nanoparticles get up my nose while I'm sleeping, what kind of reaction might I have? And if they are invisible........how do I REALLY know they're in there?
I was having quite a lot of fun with this until I came across the article in National Geographic (June 2006) regarding nano-technology. Turns out this stuff is for REAL! And in high enough concentrations, it can kill you!
So if there are "invisible" silver nanoparticles in blankets, where else are they being put that we don't even know about?????????????
