I thought that a 'computer tips' thread would hardly 'rock the boat'; I am on a high, having solved a problem that has been bugging me for weeks.
It is related to the newsletter, but not directly so. I prepare the newsletters here, at home, and FTP them up to a 'junk site' I have for that purpose. The problem? The FTP program I use hogs the CPU; it will try to use 100% (and more if it could), and I get alarm bells clanging, lights flashing...etc Googled what I thought might be the right question to ask, and came up with a freeware program that assigns new registry customisable values for the maximum amount that any application can demand from the CPU at any one time. There is a customisable refresh rate, and it has worked! Rebooted, sent up a mass of files and the CPU was hovering around the 50% mark/no banshee alarm, no flashing lights.!!!! Anyone who has a tip they find sorts out a common problem, feel free to add it to this thread.............

Back your stuff up! Grab an extra hard disk or external hard disk that plugs in with those new-fangled USB thingees and back up the stuff that would make you cry if you lost it.... we all think it's never going to happen, but time and again it does! Maybe 5 people a day call me cos they've lost data that is now unrecoverable.

Back up everything on DVDs, and external hardrive. Get a utility like Norton Ghost. Dont put speakers to close to your drive bays. Get a shredding program like windows washer. Go into your hardrive every month and start deleting any file which is not in a folder(Unless you want the file or it is in the windows directory) If a .DDL file is just hanging around, delete it. Open up your task manager and chek you your explorer.exe is eating up more then 20,000 bytes of ram. If it is, right click->end process(ignore the warnings dont delete anything with the words system in type) then re run the program with file-new task-> exlporer
