This accounts not only for atheism but all religions that either deny the Creator or worship the creation. Basically, people suppress the truth of God because a knowledge of God imposes limits on human autonomy.

There seems to be various reasons to not believe in God. For instance, Freud said that God was a delusion and Karl Marx called God "opium for the people". So if there are many different reasons to believe in God then there would also be a lot of reasons not to believe in God.

An atheist is created when their perception of "god" comes into conflict with reality. By reason alone, that god automatically ceases to exist. In fact, theism, theoretically, is a constant state of re-evaluating ones view of "God". If we didn't, then we'd all be atheists (or very ignorant theists).
