I'm not sure we disagree here. Repentance comes before forgiveness, not after. But I may have misunderstood you.

A rationalization. We do want to sin, because we want to do what we want to do. Often, we give in to that temptation.

You're right. We want to sin and it's sin, no matter what you call it. But many of us refuse to call it a sin, to excuse our behavior.
I am striving to become free from the desire to sin (temptation). Because at that point, Satan will have no power over me, and through my faith in Christ, I'll get there. But till then, in spite of that faith, Satan does have some influence over me, unfortunately. Nothing big, just those annoying little things--like getting annoyed too easily.

It may be thoroughly off-topic, but that never quite made sense to me... At least in the common translations, it seems to imply that, absent our request not to, God otherwise would lead us into temptation. If God wouldn't, then why are we asking God not to?

Good luck with that! Truly! No one since Jesus has been able to accomplish that. We would all like to be free of that monkey on the back!
