Default Jack Mormons

My mother lives in Moab and spaks of something called "Jack" Mormons. Can someone tell me what this means. It sounds a bit like a mildly practicing believer. Sort of a Christmas and Easter type.

Immediately, 2 conflicting definitions come to mind. I'm not sure which it is.

1 - Someone who is not a member of the church but might as well be (lives the same kind of lifestyle).

2 - Someone who is a member of the church but does not live the lifestyle.

Like I said, these can't both be right. I'll see what I can find

Looks like I may have been at least partly right in both cases

Your mom lives in Moab!!! That's an awesome place!!!

Well, I've heard the term all my life and to me it has always meant a person who is LDS in name only. We generally baptize children when they reach the age of eight. When a person reaches adulthood and no longer is interested in practicing the religion (but probably doesn't really have anything against it either), we say he is a Jack Mormon.

Do you know where the term came from?

Edit: Haha just kidding, of course the great Wiki () provides the answer:

The traditional belief is that the term originated in Missouri, during the Kirtland period of LDS Church history, circa 1834. When Church members were expelled from Jackson County by a mob, many fled to Clay County, where local citizens, mostly Democrats, were sympathetic and friendly toward the Mormons. These citizens were pejoratively labelled "Jack" Mormons by the citizens of Jackson County.
It also said that the term has jokingly been used to refer to Mormons registered as Democrats. I thought that was funny

Actually north of Moab in Castle Valley.

That is pretty much the impression I got of what the term meant.
