The silence of women in the pulpit is detremental to spiritual growth in many fundamentalist churches.


It is interesting how a fundamentalist will pretend like critical scriptures simply do not exist. For example, if a female is given the Holy Spirit and the gift of prophesy, as it clearly says in Acts 2.17, where is the place of prophetic speech for the female if not before the entire congregation?

Acts 2:17 "'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

1 Corinthians 11 also gives instruction for women and men who are prophesying in the worship service! Women were to cover their heads, and men were not to. New Testament scholars still are uncertain as to what exactly the head covering is (is it long hair or a peice of clothing?) - but it is clear that Corinth had a popular cult to Isis that had bald female preists who prophesied in the temple and the head covering was used in the Christian communities as a distinguishing mark. Paul also was careful to preserve patriarchalism - the leadership of the male - in spite of women prophesying in worship.

ESV Acts 21:8 On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied.

Philip had four unmarried daughters who prophesied, most likely before a congregation of men, women, and slaves (which may or may not include unbelievers), which is the only place in the NT where prophesy occurs.

24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you. 26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.

Indeed, Paul right after this emphasizes that women are to remain quiet during the time of prophesy themselves, just like everyone else in v 30.

"As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

It is shameful for the woman, just like anyone else, to speak during the time of prophesy, but when it is time for her to exercize her gift, she does so like everyone else.

Sure.

It was important for Paul to make the church clearly distinguishable from the Isis cult in Corinth which utilized charismatic speech from female priests and prophets. The solution was order - and this order was designed to maintain patriarchy, the rock on which Roman economy and state was built. This is an apologetic concern: the Isis cult (the only religion in the Roman Empire in addition to Christianity that allowed full participation of women in worship) was persecuted and frowned upon by many people in the Roman Empire because it did not share Roman patriarchial values - the activities of the preistesses threatened male dominance.

So because women and men had the gift of prophesy and it was to be done in the worship services in an orderly fashion, everyone had to remain silent, especially the women - in order to affirm that while they are participating fully, the patriarchalism which sustains Roman economy and the state is not threatened.

Well, then we would be getting into the topic of whether people are still given spiritual gifts from the holy spirit today. I'm just going to say that my church has no prohetesses or prophets, for that matter. women keep silent, just as the Bible demands.
