Default Reference needed

A friend who I otherwise respect and admire, says there is no historical reference to anyone named Jesus made in any historical documents written prior to 325 AD. I disagreed but can't find any.

Can anyone help me out here, please?

Your friend should be embarrassed. See Historicity of Jesus.

Default But where?

I've read it, all of it, and everything else I can find, but the answer to my question eludes me - what writer (before 325), mentioned Jesus by name? The "scrolls" I've been referred to all turned out to be tiny scraps, without mentioning Him.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems a simple enough question to me.

Friend Winterchase,
Does the following help?

Quote:
'Earliest mention' of Jesus is found on 1st century ossuary

By Marcus Warren in New York
Last Updated: 12:43AM BST 23/10/2002

The words "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus" inscribed on an empty 1st century ossuary have provoked a flurry of excitement in the world of biblical archaeology.
The inscription on a limestone box dated AD 63, only three decades after the crucifixion, has been hailed as the first mention of the historical Jesus Christ, earlier even than the Gospels.
Scholars have confirmed the 20-inch-long box and the writing as genuinely from the period.
The remaining doubt is whether the James, Joseph and Jesus referred to in Aramaic script are members of the Holy Family.
Andre Lemaire, a palaeographer at the Sorbonne, who was shown the inscription by an Israeli collector in Jerusalem, has estimated that only 20 men called James in the city had a brother called Jesus and a father named Joseph at the time.
Love & rgds

I don't see how you can be having trouble with this:

Did you actually read any of it?

You would have found Josephus' mentioning of Jesus - not to mention all of the early Christian writings (like the Gospels and beyond).
