I realize it a common and comfortable stereotype for those 'outside' Christianity to presume that the very vocal 'Christian Right' speaks for all Chrstians, but nothing could be further from the truth. I guess it would be like assuming that all atheists are anti-American because some of the more vocal ones want to remove 'In God We Trust' from money and 'Under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance.
The problem is, and I think lilithu pointed this out in an excellent post, the 'Religious Right' rejects 'Christian liberals' because they are not conservative enough, and the 'Atheist Left' rejects them because they 'have' religion. When the more moderate and even liberal Christians went to the polls in 2004, many of them were faced with an uncomfortable choice between two parties neither of whom represented their views accurately.
One of the books mentioned in the article sounds like one that would make this point better than I can. I haven't read Jim Wallis's "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It,", but it sounds like I need to find it.
