Girl, 8, 'was tortured for being witch'
A girl aged 8 was stuffed into a bag after being denounced as a witch and was moments from being drowned in a canal by her family, a court was told yesterday. She had been starved, beaten, cut with a knife and had chilli peppers rubbed in her eyes in the plot to kill her, it was said.
The girl had been accused of being a witch by a boy, also 8, who was a member of her extended family in Hackney, http://www.religionnewsblog.com/11169

OH MY GODS! I'm saddened and sickened by this and really, really, for once in my life, do not know what to say. I think I'm going to cry.
I just...I'm speechless...I..wow, may these horrible, horrible people spend the rest of their living days in prison. I'm disgusted.

How could her family possibly take this stuff seriously is what I would like to know, I mean come on, she's only 8! Are people that superstitious that they feel threatened by an innocent child? I read some other articles on similar events in that area; there was a little boy found in the same river, and evidence related to "ritual sacrifice!" I don't think it's the girl's fault, I think the family themselves is involved in some kinda crazy cult or something....

Religion does strange things to some peoples minds.
While it can be comforting to some, in others it can be taken to ridiculous extremes. Of course thats not an argument against religion as such, these people would probably act psychotically even if they were secular.

People don't need an excuse to do things like this. Here in the U.S. a guy just confessed to beating and stabbing to death his 8 year old daughter and her 9 year old best friend. Some people are just sick.

this family came from Angola, where is that located? The family was probably brought up that way, obviously they believe in some sort of black magic, witchcraft; and just really twisted personal beliefs taken to the extreme; they seem to think the girl is evil by nature; this is really weird, like something you see from a B-rated horror flick...but much worse
