please check the parrallel scriptures for this in the other gospels. It indeed uses "Loves more" as opposed to hate. Jesus did not speak Greek, but Aramaic. Consequently, the same events come out a bit differently depending on the translator. Now his words have been translated once more to English. It is best to consider ALL of the scriptures to get a solid idea about what the Lord meant. That or come to the erroneous conclusion that they scriptures disagree with each other.

As for the word being a sword"

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Also, the warfare is Spiritual in nature not physical.

There were many things Christ said, which at first glance seemed opposed to other things he said.
This is why its so important to read all his words, over and over.

In one place he teaches us to love our enemys then he says, if we dont hate our own family we cannot be his disciple.
Christ is all about salvation.
Let me give you an example: Lets say for instance that Noah gave up his way of living so that he might build the ark And that he had been a very rich man. What if his own family (who might not have believed that there was going to be a flood) bothered him in such away, because they missed all the riches that they had had before, convinced him to stop building the ark. No Salvation.

There are many things in this world that would try to deter us from the obediance of Christ and sometimes this includes our own family.

Another scripture says: Do not love the world or the things in the world.
and another: Love of the world is enmity with God.

I dont think Christ meant to literally Hate the person, but to know that anything "outside " of Christ is Death.

I think the weight evidence in support of Biblical contradiction far outweighs the evidence for Biblical inerrancy.
In fact I know of no evidence for Biblical inerrancy yet I can spend days quoting contradictions that would have you tied into pretzel like knots attempting to harmonize them.

The fact that one gospel says something entirely different than another gospel is hardly a revelation.

I will gladly concede the "Sword of the Soul" argument.

Between the scripture both you and Scott have shown me it seems more than reasonable that Christ would reappear with "A sword in his mouth" metaphorically speaking as the word of God regardless of the context.

Rev 1:16
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength.
