What made me think of this was the situation lots of muslims are in right now. The situation is:
You are backed into a corner by an enemy and made to either die, or give up your religion/personal values to convert to the enemies said religion/personal values. Which is more effective to maintain your religion/personal values in the future? Dying a martyr, or submitting and keeping your own alive secretly? I choose the latter. I am curious to see what different people see as more effective to thier personal causes and why.

Is that really the situation Muslim's face? I think the 2 conflicting factors in martyrdom within places such as Afganistan is whether you live a life of poverty and strife, or die in glory fighting an invading force - something to throw your anger at.
Unless these people really believe we're there to convert... in which case *face palm* ... anyway... martyrdom certainly would inspire others of your belief to rise up and would create loyal, if delusional, adherents. On the other hand, they'd have a high death rate. So I'd go for the latter. If one's religion is worth anything then it'll survive in the underground and one day emergy dominent by peaceful transmittion. Martyrdom is violence and violence will be reciprocated. Peaceful transmition too will be reciprocated... So the question is, which would you rather have? Violence or peace? If you want peace, then show peace. It would depend on the values and beliefs they want me to convert to and what they would want me to do to "prove my faith" as it were.

Martyrdom is for suckers. I've never understood the perception that it's admirable. Frankly, the type of zealot who would actually rather die than just verbalize something against their beliefs, is also the type who seems capable of doing anything in the name of their religion as well.

Valuing honesty makes you a zealot capable of doing anything?

Greetings
I think this has been asked not too far back. I chose Self-Preservation in all situations, as that's all i'm really here for: Staying alive and having kids. GhK.

No, why would you say that?

Seemed like that's what you were saying. Being unwilling to lie about your beliefs means you'd do anything for them.

You might want to head to the store to pick up some more strawmen - you may be running low.

How is a question a strawman? Is that not what you meant? Then clarify.
