This is a variation on the old question of whether riches destroy spirituality. Today, most of us are not rich, but most of us can reasonably aspire to all sorts of technological toys and marvels, from cell phones, to entertainment systems, to computers. This is a kind of wealth. The question I have is does this kind of wealth distract us from our spirituality? And, if it does, is that a good thing?
But why might that be a good thing? Well, if you look at all the "moral issues" floating around politics these days, you might wonder whether it's better for people to be concerned with those issues or more concerned with where their next DVD is coming from. What are your ideas about this? Is technology a new form of wealth that, like conventional wealth, destracts us from our spirituality? And, if so, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Right now we are using one of the highest form of technology, the internet. And what are we using it for? For discussing our spirituality. I don't feel that it will in anyway distract us from that, if anything (like the internet has proven) it will help it flourish. And about the moral deal, I don't care about the "morals in politics" because it has no influence on my spirituality. So again, I don't see it as a distraction.

Hey Sunstone, I agree with Master Vigil - the point he made was quite right.
Sure, you need money to have technology, but I can't see why the technology should destroy spirituality per se; it is again one of these points that illustrates the truism that there is nothing on Earth that is wholy good - or bad; the way it is used by us humans defines the 'Good' and 'Bad'. OK Master vigil, we are discussing spirituality here, using the tech; unfortunately, somewhere around us is a guy who is sending pornographic pictures of kids out on the net. -That is just one example, but I guess you'll see 'where I'm coming from'?

Distraction from spirituality with the internet? Yes...Why?...because right now I could be at prayer, or reading the scriptures. So, therefore, yes it's a distraction. This forum could be a point in destroying spirituality as well if one uses it as such. Are you looking for someone to confirm that there is no God...you'll find it here. are you looking for someone to say one religion is better than the other you might find that here too...BUT if you are looking to further yourself in religion to be helpful of right views on your religion this is also the place. I think it's all in the individuals perspectives on how they look at things.

tecnology only interfears with spirituality if you allow it to. Just like anything elce. Tecnology is inherant to our kind, we have been using it and improving it from day one. If for some reason your cell phone makes you less spiritual, then either A) you wern't really all that spiritual to begin with or B) you are way to addicted to your cell phone.

Ahh but is that a product of the culture we live in or a result inherant to tecnology itself?.
Consumerism is more of a threat than tecnology itself. Consumerism promices fofillment in the form of owning things to make you happy, yet consumerism wouldn't survive unless it was always makeing you want something new to make you happy. Thus you never reach a state of peace with yourself. You can enjoy tecnology without being consumerist. I'll take the "comparatively spiritually aware" as a compliment. ![]() wa:do
