I'm still puzzled regarding what you USAians mean by "Evangelical".


Thats because there is no cut and dry definition.
I don`t believe the numbers Pah cites are actual in the sense that most Southern Baptists would either consider themselves evangelical or follow the same sola scriptural conservative ideology regardless of what they consider themselves.

For the purposes of political clout the number is much higher than 7%.

Thanks for pointing this out. On the page on question, under "self descriptions," it also says:

Evangelicals are over two times more likely than adults nationwide to see themselves as an “evangelical Christian.” Specifically, 89% of evangelicals describe themselves as an “evangelical Christian" compared to 39% of adults nationwide. (2000)
The reason why the 7 per cent statistic seemed awfully small to me was that I had earlier heard that last-mentioned statistic, namely that 39% of adults SELF-IDENTIFY as "evangelical Christian." Apparently, though, Barma uses a much narrower definition of "evangelical Christian" than by relying on self-definition.
