A teacher told me:
A system of beliefs which assert or explicityly presuppose the existence of a super natural being or beings and require the performance of certain actions usually including rituals and worship if one is to gain benefit or avoid punishments. At RF we define religion as: Any specific system of belief and/or/without worship, often involving a code of ethics and a philosophy. How do you?

that's about right i think....though i'm not sure if i'd personally throw in the "avoid punishment" part. I'd like to think we can find a better motivating factor than fear.

I also prefer Yi-Fu Tuan's definition as supplied by Deut, Rex. Any chance you would consider adopting that one (and attributing it properly, of couse)?

I like Yi-Fu Tuan's definition as well. When I saw the question, I was going to say "An over-arching belief system, which if taken seriously, projects itself into ethics, practice, and possibly ritual." Yi-Fu was far more concise than me
.

I think the latin definition is "to bind back." I could be wrong about that. But I think religion is an impulse for meaning like deut said. But I also think it is recognizing that we don't know everything. But when religion is used to denote that a practitioner knows everything (or has access to something that knows everything), it is no longer a religion.
