Lynches, rapes, flogging, and splitting up of familys so humans could be sold as cattle.... the whole idea of slavery makes me sick.
![]() On a side note, if you want a good read about the slave trade, and the slow slog to rid the USA of its racist leanings check out : The Strange Career of Jim Crow By C. Vann Woodward, William S. McFeely Truely Awesome book! It was written just at the start of the 60's civil rights movement, the newest editions have a chapter on what happined post 1965. The Watts riot and deaths of Dr. King and Malcom X had not yet happined at origional printing. Another great book on the subject is "the Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen J. Gould wa:do

Hard to see everything from just that article but Christianity is about subservience to Christ and through a hierarchy in some chruches of Christainitycould make it feasible in their belief structure. Slave is a word that connotates lack of will on the part of the slave but I imagine that a religion that is 100 % or at least 90 % theistic in nature, in the belief that God micro-manages the world, could construct a plan of subservience where all parties involved come out ahead as they have followed God's plan within a heirarchy. In a large sense they are servents (aka slaves?) to the will of the church and to Jesus who is their link to God.
The good book has long been a Christian source for repentance and with the debt of repentance comes the possiblity of an endentured lifestyle to live within a paradign that serves God and promotes the life that some (not all) churches aspire to based on theroies on the nature of the Garden of Eden. Would be cool to get ahold of that phamplet and see within the premises stated how one could mold modern-day slavery into the Bible. |

There were certain passages from the bible that was used to justify slavery in the American South. I think that should be taught but it should be pointed out that these interpretations were wrong and the bible shouldn't be used to justify enslavement or persecution of different groups.

I stayed at my grandmother's house the last couple days to help her out with setting up her computer and some electronic gadgets, and we got to talking about African Americans and football. She (a strict Southern Baptist) eventually said that it was good that we brought black people out of Africa because Africa is such a bad place to live. I was pretty surprised that anyone still thinks like this. I explained to her that a lot of what's wrong with Africa is a result of European intervention, and that there were great kingdoms there in the past. Of course, it's also important to remember that there was slavery within Africa at the time that whites were shipping blacks off on the death ships to the west (though this doesn't justify europeans doing it as well).

Actually Robtex I would like to read it, eaven if it bothers the heck out of me. The only way to confront and possibly halt thinking that that is to understand it. What points do they make and how can we refute them without looking intolerant ourselves.
Its sad that thinking like this still exists today, not surprizing but sad. It has only been 40 some odd years since the civil rights movents of the 60's, it took a hundred years from the end of slavery to get that far. Racism won't be wiped out in a handfull of decades, it will take generations. We have come a long way but we arn't done yet. wa:do
