The Mahabharata is the mother of all epics. It's massive, several times the size of the Illiad. There was a television serial that released in 1988, it became a huge craze and literally brought the country to a standstill whenever it was aired. This is how a lot of Indian people became very intimately familiar with the story. You can watch this serial(with subtitles)

An IMDB link to it: "Mahabharat" (1988)

However, be warned this serial is MASSIVE, 94 episodes long, each episode 45 min long. Can you believe that my mom recorded all them when it was aired by BBC! This is how I became so familiar with Mahabharata as a growing up child. There is another version, a 6 hour play by Peter Brooks. Apparently, there is a huge mega production underway on the Mahabharata in Indian cinema right now, billed as India's LOTR. So I am guessing you will get to see it very soon.
