A couple of the guys on a discussion group I suscribe to were 'discussing' jihad. One fellow is particularly anti-islam, and likes to point to the ills in the koran etc.

Here is a reply by a Muslim member:

YOU RESPONDED: "The words in the Koran, the Sunnah/Hadiths, and the historical
consequences
that have flowed therefrom. See my forthcoming presentation of evidence in

I SAY: Did you know that war in Islam forbids the killing of civilians
(including babies, old people, etc.), forbids the destruction of food, forbids
suicide, forbids mutilation of combatants when killed, and forbids the
demolition of built structures (including Churches and Synagogues)? Did you know
that there are conditions and requirements that must be met to wage jihad?

What did the 9/11 terrorists do? They did the exact opposite of what the Islamic
sources say. They killed civilians (including babies, old people, etc. Militants
are also beheading civilians in Iraq), they surely destroyed lots food and
restaurants, they killed themselves (suicide missions), they mutilated the
bodies of combatants by incinerating the Twin Towers with huge planes filled
with oil, and they definitely demolished hugely built structures. And the last
example of not destroying Churches and Synagogues, you know what happened at the
hands of Islamists in Turkey, and even the explosions at mosques in Iraq. And
who are they receiving orders from? From orthodox Sunni scholars? NO. They
received orders from al-Qa'eda leaders who reject the four orthodox schools of
Sunni jurisprudence that most Muslims today follow (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki,
Hanbali schools), and are led by Osama bin Laden who never received Islamic
education and training, much less the fulfillment of requiremen.

What do we learn from the above? We learn that terrorists, militants, etc. USE
Islam to justify their actions, though the Koran and Hadith oppose all actions
they do. I conclude that terrorists are not following the Islamic sources. They
are blatantly contradicting them. It is not orthodox Sunnis making a mess in the
world today, but Wahhabi/Salafi fanatics who are not orthodox, but a modern
phenmenon that began in the 1700s. And, therefore, I also conclude that you are
not logical in your position. Instead of judging the authenticity of Islam by
its sources, you judge them by the actions of a minority of fanatics.
This is not a scholary approach.

I don't really care who is right, just like this post because I find well argued and fair in tone.

However, I thought some of the Muslim members here might appreciate the message.

I think that suicide bombers shouldn't be called that because okay, they may kill theselves, but they are doing it to kill the enemy. Unless they kill civilians, then they're murderers.

Most suisice bombers kill civilians... unless you count women, children and the elderly all your enemies.
Sadly 90% of the time it isn't about killing 'the enemy' it is about spreading fear and killing civillians.
