For many years I have been wondering why we pray over some food and not others. I was raised up to say thanks over our three meals a day. But when we have snacks we never said thanks over them like popcorn or candy bar or poping a tic-tac in the mouth. If we can skip some food during the day then why can't we skip most of our foods. Say all we have to do is give thanks for the whole day at breakfast only. Or lets go one step more and only give thanks on the first breakfast of the week on Sunday which covers us for seven days or we could even start with the first of the month........where do we end? arlan

I guess giving thanks for food is up to each individual to do any way they want.

I have never prayed over food. At this christmas party thing that my mom's side of the family has each year, they pray, but I don't.
I think I'm going to start praying over my tic tacs though. That's funny. And jelly bellies:"Dear lord, thank you for the jelly bellies. How did you know that I love pink grapefruit flavoured ones!? Next time though, could you put some chocolate pudding ones and lemon ones in the bag as well? I'll allow some mistakes, but don't let it happen again, lord, okay? Amen."

Maybe while you're at it, Hannah, you can pray for me some sugar-free jelly bellies!

I used to pray when ever I ate. I used to pray in my head though, since I never felt comfortable praying with others. I'd just look up and think, "Dear Lord, thank you for giving me access to such things. Please look after those who aren't so fortunate" then I'd eat.
It's just a way of keeping one thankful for what one has. Took a while to get out of that habit... I'm no so sure that's a good thing.

Short pray before eating even snacks. Longer prayer after eating but only if we ate bread. Eating bread is considered eating a meal. Were thankful for what we have to eat. Also after eating a meal we are happy, satisfied. When one is happy it is a good time to pray so we add in extra prays also.

YID613 ~ So you only pray after a meal if you eat bread. So if you don't eat bread you don't give a prayer for the meal? What if you had eaten a waffle - is that consider bread? It has almost the same stuff in it. What about a pop-tart is that bread? So you have long and short prayers for food - what is short in time, 5 sec., and long? I find it interesting because I spent 5 weeks in Isreal and never heard a Hebrew in prayer except at the whailing wall and that took a while. arlan
