Is God simply a manifestation of our own egos? Were the Gods of Old created from man's highest ideals and expressions of their deepest thoughts?

This question is quite a paradox (in my mind at least). Religion, in my opinion, is largely about getting rid of the ego - denying the self in order to serve others. Even the story of Jesus is largely, again in my opinion, about letting go of the self - Jesus, the Son of God, laid down His life, for us.

So, if you're referring to the Christian God in your question, I suppose God is a manifestation of our egos, but paradoxically, it is a manifestation of a desire to rid ourselves of our egos...

No if anything it would be a manifestation of the Freuding concept of the Super Ego. God is meant to represent everything that is good and kind, the same as what the Super Ego does.
