Well I think I would leave this argument at that. First the West engaged in unsafe sex. Then they realized they were mistaken because that leads to bad things (the negative effects of the additional pursuit of pleasure) and decided on safe sex. Unfortunately the step from unsafe to safe sex was not created by thinking ahead but by some bad experiences. So instead of realizing the mistake before making it the West realized their mistake after making it. My claim is that as the pursuit for pleasure that can be had continues the West will find (it seems through, unfortunately, experience) that pre-marital sex too has its negatives. Smart people might get out of the media hype but then how many of us are that smart or have the necessary will power. I hope, though, that this real enlightenment to the negatives of the pursuit of pleasure is sooner than later.

And FYI, making mistakes is how we learn, and America is a toddler nation. Don't forget that it is only 200 years old and trying something that before had never ever EVER been done before. Obviously mistakes are going to be made in the long run, and I doubt we'll live to see them get it right. But without precedence, how can we know what is right or not? When it comes to sex, I do agree that it should be pretty obvious what the problems are, such as over-population and unwanted children, but to me, that's really it. The hippie-era has taught us a lot of things about what freedoms are safe and what freedoms are not. Now, we've got the so-called "bustas"(wannabe "gangstas") to teach us new lessons.

From what I've seen, every generation in the West learns something new for the next. I think it will be a few generations before we even come close to getting it right. But we can do it... as long as they actually get on with the plan to dismantle nuclear weapons!! (but that's another story)
