Is there any point in hoping for a reformation of Christianity? Should progressive Christians who approach religion from a metaphorical, community-oriented point of view just give up on organized religion? Is there any point in organized religion?

What does 'leaving organized religion' mean? Even if you left it, you would still find people with similar beliefs, inevitably creating a new denomination.

Leaving organized religion means just that -- deciding to exist outside of organized religion. No membership. No involvement. James |

This is why I stopped going to church in the first place. So many interpretations and opinions by those of one domination, through ignorance, arrogance, misinformation and secular ethics, what is different then meeting up with a bunch of guys at dinner and discussing the same topics?
Admittedly, part of my dissent is due to my agnosticism. I don't believe anyone knows anything absolute about anything. It's a copout. Any attempt at establishing a stance for yourself through an idea eliminates any growth in understanding through others anyway. What is the point?

Hmmm...
I guess it depends if the "organization" is helping people..I mean really helping people with their efforts..In all the ways..Not condemning..Just helping people.. Love Dallas

I'd like an organisation where I could go to debate, discuss and learn. Kind of like a real life version of this place.

A liberal Christian is not necessarily progressive, nor a progressive Christian a liberal one.
It is difficult but not impossible to be a practising Christian out side a church. Even a heretic like myself finds comfort and strength amongst others how ever few. The Anglican faith is a very broad church... some might say a church of misfits. It is a church that functions best through common practices rather than dogma.

Is it not then, similar to a social club in its primary function? (honest question, not being smug)

It knows that its extremities have widely differing attitudes, but that they can all still worship Jesus together in love. Over several hundred years many churches have split from it, and in the future many more will probably do so still. However the church of God continues to grow in its many parts.
