In what sense or way, if any, do people need a god?

They don't.

People need meaning.
I read somewhere that Spinoza loved his God so much he didn't expect God to love him back. I thought there was something wonderful about that. I think somewhere inside us we all have an awareness of the infinite, I don't think we need to be conscious of it. Some people get it in Church, some people get it walking on the hills, others playing football. I think we need to be able to forget ourselves. Is that God?

Some do; some don't.
For some, it's a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that is all of reality, and abandoning, discarding or ignoring any one piece leaves the puzzle unfinished.

People need many things, some of which are provided by God---whether God is a reality or just an idea some people have. Stephenw pointed out a good human need: meaning. Victor Frankl talked about humanity's "will to meaning", and I definitely think he's right. We also need comfort, guidance, assurance, beauty, mystery, awe, love and a variety of other things, all of which people are able to find in God.
However, we can also be soothed, guided and reassured by other people, immersed in the beauty, mystery and awe of the natural world, and loved by our friends and family. I would say, then, that people need those things which God supposedly provides, but not necessarily God.
