I thought it might be a good exercise to name something you like about a religion of which you are not a participant.
Anyone want to give it a go?

Bruce, I notice you're from Maryland. Where exactly, if you don't mind me asking?

I actually like the commitment, no matter how misguarded in my opinion, of all religions. Society lacks 'commitment' to most things nowadays. I also like the Mahayana school of thought on Emptiness, it resonates a lot with my own beliefs (if an atheist can have them) |

Of course atheists can have beliefs! Careful, or you'll only help perpetuate the fallacy of atheists not holding any beliefs at all. ![]()

1/"misguided" 2/I know what you mean, I mean, just look at divorce rates. 3/ Of course atheists can have beliefs! Careful, or you'll only help perpetuate the fallacy of atheists not holding any beliefs at all.
1/Thanks 2/ Shocking arn't they....I mean these people that get divorced nowadays should be hung, drawn and quatered (...whoops, think I have maybe just signed my own death warrent) 3/What I meant was religious beliefs, not personal ones. The problem of 'drawing up a charter of atheist beliefs', is that you then get into static and reductive ideal of what atheist can and can not believe....and I wouldn't want that! ![]() |

Well . . . ganja & reggae, and some cool variations on the usual themes, make Rasta one I'm fond of, though I don't know a great deal about it.
I'm not suggesting drawing up a "charter of atheistic beliefs". I'm just saying that there are different types of atheists. There are those who believe that science is our only tool for understanding the world, and those who believe that there is more to life than what we see. Religious beliefs and atheism are not mutually exclusive.

OK OK OK....If we are going to get this into it (what is everyone today, they are just so picky) quote from original statement "it resonates a lot with my own beliefs (if an atheist can have them)" therefore I was not "perpetuating the fallacy", I was asking a question! |
