You live in Utah? Well, welcome, fellow-Utahn! (Where abouts, roughly?)

I think that Mormons who have lived their entire lives in Utah are, as a rule, have a more limited perspective than Mormons who have lived, even for a relatively short time, in a part of the world where they have been in the minority. They tend to judge everyone they meet according to their own standard. I don't think it's necessarily intentional, but I'm sure it can be terribly frustrating for a non-LDS Utahn to hear himself referred to as "a really good person, and he's not even LDS."

Interesting stuff about Utah and family there Katzpur. My questions aren't exactly dramatic for an "anything goes" thread. I'm just generally curious here.

If blessings are contingent upon greater obedience, what would be grounds for not going to Heaven at all?

I know that gender roles and the structure of the family are of great importance to Mormons. I also know that the LDS Church has changed somewhat in response to feminism over the last few decades. How far would be too far regarding that?

LOL. Well between Fish-Hunter and uss_bigd, I've had about all the drama I'm interested in for a few days.

Without going into a great deal of detail (although I'd be happy to if it's detail you're looking for), in order to not go to Heaven at all, a person would pretty much have to have a perfect knowledge of who God was and then flat out deny what he knew to be true. Not very many people are even in a position to be able to be denied entrance to Heaven, because not many have such a knowledge. One person who probably would have been a candidate for "Outer Darkness" (our more commonly used term for "Hell), would be the Apostle Peter. Had he, in the face of all his experiences with Jesus Christ and in light of what he knew positively to be true (you may remember his words, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God."), later gone back on his testimony, he would probably have not been permitted into Heaven. Most of us (us meaning everybody) have faith that what we believe is true, but we haven't been given a perfect knowledge, and a perfect knowledge is required before the denial of that knowledge will cause one to not be allowed into Heaven.

Hmmm. I'm not sure how to answer this. We probably still have fairly rigid gender roles, but the Church's leadership does recognize that everyone's situation is somewhat different and leaves many of the decisions on gender roles, etc. up to the individual couples. As the data I provided indicates, we place an extremely high value on education, not just for men but for women. We're encouraged to learn everything in this life we possibly can and to use our knowledge to strengthen our families and communities. I've worked outside the home for my entire adult life, including when I had two young children (although I just worked part-time during their growing up years). We have always considered the man to be "the head of the household" but only to the extent that he does not abuse this position. In other words, all decisions about finances, child-rearing, etc. are to be made jointly and not just by the man. Does this help?

I'm in the Cache Valley area. This is a little off topic, but does that fish guy ALWAYS answer simple questions like that? Holy cow - all I wanted was a yes or no...

I Get the urge to drink alcohol when I am fasting (seriously). I don't drink much only occasionally and not while I'm fasting, but I always find I crave White wine. Maybe I'm just strange

i think there is a difference in attitude about life in general between utah mormons and your average mormon, it might be the population density of lds members and the redneck mentality of utah.. i don;t know
