CNN is going to run a show called "God's Warriors" which looks at Judaism, Christianity and Islam later this month. Many of the mini clips are already online here:
God's Warriors - Special Reports from CNN.com I want to open this thread with two agendas. One to discuss the mini clips found on the link and the show after it comes out and second to make a topic generator out of this quote page on the topic list: Your e-mails, I-Reports: Is faith under attack? - CNN.com If you can please go to the the above link, pull out quotes you would like to debate and put them in the religious debate section sourcing the quote with the url above. Thoughts on the mini clips or the series (when it comes out) ? |

Lucky me, I have a DVR and recorded all three of them. I'm beginning to think that Fundamentalism, or Extremism or whatever you want to call it, is a separate problem of it's own and not paticular to any religion or belief system. It's an us vs them, good vs evil, mentality that puts their beliefs on a pedestal and demonizes the rest of the world. I think even an Atheist could fall prey to it.

I haven't watched any of it, but just as interesting as how Jews get money from Christian Americans is why Christian Americans donate in the first place. A large portion of Christians in America think there is going to be a second coming of Christ and that Israel needs to be returned to the Jews as one of the conditions for this to happen.

I watched the muslim warriors part and was not pleased. The radical muslims/jihadis/extremists were linked with a few signature qualities. These characteristics were in short a person who:
makes all five salaat regurlarly attends the masjid wear hijab (for women) read Quran frequently wish to have shariah inacted among the muslims in muslim countries These were the decriptions of people who are noted in the media to be extremists. It was these things that were used for the description of people like Usama bin Laden. It even went so far as to call an American born woman who wears hijab, never has been involved in any violent activity of questionable groups, a non-violent jihadi. I mean what was up with that? Why is it that she was a non-violent jihadi? The report linked repeatedly the idea that a muslim who subscribes to the aforementioned qualities is most likely to be a radical/extremist/jihadi whatever. The problem with that assesment is that those things I mentioned are all things that are central to Islam. A muslim is at his/her most basic practice to pray, cover, attend the masjid, and want muslims to actually abide by the law we say we believe in. So in essence they said without actually saying it, that it is not radical islam or muslims they wish to eradicate, but Islam itself as a whole. A radical muslim is one who actually abides by the law of Islam personally, regardless of whether or not they are violent. A moderate muslim is one who attends the masjid only for friday prayer if that, does not wear hijab, does not pray, and generally does not regard islam as an important part of daily life. Everytime they described a muslim who was violent or regarded as extreme, the first decriptions were 9 times out of 10 "they started making all the prayers" or "they started to read Quran all the time" or "they started going to the masjid listening to talks mre often". All these things a muslim is supposed to do, and citing them as a means to extremism was both insulting and complete rubbish. So I wish they would go ahead and be straightforward although they kinda were because I caught it, and say that it is practicing muslims who are a threat to all people. I could respect it more if they say it straight and leave the propaganda behind. |
