How much respect does religion actually deserve? (Jesus Christ, Latter-Day Saints, beliefs) - Page 2

I dont see any statistics in my post thank you very much. All i stated was that i think people become more secure with their religion the older it is. As if the passage of time makes it more valid. (when in fact its validity doesnt change).

p.s. I dont see why it grinds your gears so? Would the introducion of factual statistics into the game really affect any beliefs you may hold true? If so, I may have another point to make

No. Which is exactly why it annoys me so much. People bring in statistics like that as if that would some how make their beliefs more valid (or, to use your terminology, more respectable), when it really says nothing at all about whether or not the beliefs are actually true!

I think that we should respect the rights of all religions, no matter how much we disagree with their views, because everyone should have the right to worship whoever they want, however they want.

I suppose we come to the argument of what is actually a religion, then. Is Pastafarianism (Flying Spaghetti Monster) a religion? Scientology? Religion based on aliens?

excellent points, rojse... and what about religions that ultimately encourage violence (like some smaller suicide cults). should these religious movements be allowed freedom and granted respect just because they're believed in by some people? (i do think that universalism needs to have a stopping point...)

Religion and religious people deserve the same respect you would give anyone else. Everyone has a right to believe what they want, and people should respect that. I respect an atheist's right to not believe in God. You don't really need to accept something to respect it.
I have never expected, however, anyone to respect my beliefs.
