وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ

I think I understand what you're saying. The difficulty I see is this: the pronoun you use in Arabic to refer to Allah has no equivalent English. Using these lowercase pronouns ("he"/"she"/"it") in reference to Allah suggests disrespect and can apply incorrect gender associations to Allah. (Please note that I seperate the two... I do not believe that such a minor misperception as a masculine Allah equates "cursing/insulting" Allah; it's just an incorrect and incomplete understanding and is ultimately harmless). Capitalizing the same pronouns ("He"/"She"/"It"), while showing respect and denoting something beyond our normal understanding of gender associations, can still cause confusion as to Allah's gender. However, we're left in a bind. In order to communicate in English, we have to resort to one of these pronouns. There are no other options, short of using the proper noun "Allah" or resorting to the Arabic word "Huwwa Al" itself. Thus, those of us who do not know Arabic but still wish to attempt to discuss Islamic theology are forced to use these inaccurate pronouns because we lack other, more valid options. In the process of using such pronouns, we spread the misperception of a gendered Allah and begin engaging in---as I understand it from your point of view---rather ridiculous and pointless debates about Allah's gender. You have to understand that such misperceptions are not intended as insults or a curses to Allah, and I don't they should be taken as such; many of the people here are used to thinking of God as male because of our own religious beliefs and our own culture, and the problem with applying pronouns to Allah only confuses the issue even more. It's a mistake, not a deliberate insult, to perceive Allah as male, and I think it should be taken as a mistake rather than as an insult.

If it's insulting to relate God to an old man by saying God has a beard, then isn't it just as insulting to refer to God as "he" or "him", which implies that God has a, uh, male appendage?

If having a beard relates him to an old man and that's bad, I don't see how calling God "him" is any better, because it just as much relates God to a man.
