I think the best comment I read on ethics was by Bertrand Russell: "The superfluity of theoretical ethics is obvious in simple cases. Suppose, for instance, your child is ill. Love makes you wish to cure it, and science tells you how to do so. There is not an intermediate stage of ethical theory, where it is demonstrated that your child had better be cured. Your act springs directly from desire for an end, together with knowledge of means."

Maybe any worthwhile ethical system must be based on compassion and reason?

I think he meant acting compassionately and logically, rather than merely logically.

The opposite of intolerance is "longsuffering".
The pure love of Christ, suffers long, and is "not easily provoked". It goes both ways, both parties need to be tolerant of each other and love one another with the pure love of Christ, in order for positive change to occur.. Number 14: 18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation Last edited by FFH; 08-12-2007 at 04:25 PM. |
