Are some of the more strident right-wing Christian churches becoming cult-like? If so, why, if not, why not?

I would just like to make a clarification, a fundamentalist Christian would be brimming with the love of Jesus, please do not consider hateful churches as fundamentalist because there are those who truly do commit to the fundamental values of Christ, namely love and forgiveness.
But yes I think some "christian" churches do go too far with cult like practices.

I'd ask since when have they not been cult-like? Fundamentalism almost by definition sets itself up in opposition to mainstream society. Afterwards, it swings between isolating itself from the mainstream and trying to convert the mainstream to it. Right now, we're going through a phase when American fundamentalists are trying to convert the rest of society to fundamentalism. Personally, I wish they'd just go back to the good old days when they tended to shun society, rather than attempt to re-make it.

I thought all Christianity was a cult.

Cults are cults until they are accepted by the status quo, then they are religions. Religions are religions until no one believes in them, then they are mythology.

Some are frighteningly cult-like. I only hope they don't get any power in the government--
Oh, crap. Nevermind. |

This country will never become a Theocracy. It is too diverse for that now.
