"It is nobler to declare oneself wrong than to insist on being right - especially when one is right." --Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra
What did Nietzsche mean?

Do you want to be right and alone or have friends?
By declaring yourself wrong you avoid a war. |

I think his statement might reflect his belief that there are fundamentally many different kinds of people, and that -- consequently -- some disagreements between people are incapable of being resolved by rational discourse. That is, it is pointless to argue some points with some people because they cannot by their very nature see beyond their nature.

Actually, it's more difficult to say you are wrong and particularly if you are right. It is nobler because it is so difficult and you made the other person feel better and you do avoid conflict.

It is better not to say "I told you so" or brag that you were right. It is being a better person to realize that there will be times when you are wrong and to think about how you wish to be treated by the person who was right. Peace does not come from the winner of the battle but how the battlers behave and react towards each other after the battle is over.
