The heart is an organ that pumps blood through the body, bringing vital nutrients to every cell. Essentially, it feeds our cells.

Fear feeds love. Because of it, we band together in order to conquer our fear. It makes us sociable. Experiencing fear also gives us a sense of empathy; watching the fear reactions of others puts us in their place, and we sympathize. Sociability and sympathy are some of the building blocks of the amalgam of emotions we call love.

It's pretty much the opposite of my deepest held belief.

Fear is the heart of hate. It precludes love. Banding together because there is something you fear is not real love, imo. Just as lust and other forms of grasping are not real love.

Fear causes one to contract. Love is expansive.

I'm not sure what to call the heart of love, except that it comes from freely giving of oneself. Empathy, compassion, equanimity, joy ... something like that.

Indeed! Also, moments of fear can remind you of what you really hold dear in your heart of hearts. Its a burst of clarity amidst the jumble of everyday life in this culture.
