What is the true meaning of this? What if your parents are abusers and have let you down or abandoned you, should you still honor them?

I don't think abusers deserve to be honored.

Some parents don't deserve to be honored. By itself, getting knocked up and squirting out a kid isn't something that deserves honor.

I don't think God had planned too far ahead, lol. Or he was expecting EVERYONE to follow these rules.
It also applies to "DO NoT STEAL". "But is it wrong for a starving man to steal a loaf of bread for his family?" And, when Jesus apparently fed 5000 people with 2 loaves and 5 fish, isn't that the same as someone copying one movie and distributing it to 1000 others? |

As a Christian, even if your parents are abusers you should love them and pray and wish for their repentance and coming to know Christ(again). You should of course get out of their as fast as possible. Honoring your parents does not mean always obeying them.

Hi Mister Emu! Glad to see you around again. Of course, we disagree on the point that you should honor your parents even if they are abusers, but -- odd as this may be -- you and I do agree on the point that if your parents are abusers, you should get out of there as soon as possible.

i would honor them anyway. they brought me into this world. a nice oppertunity to meet different people, see things.
im into falial peity and all. even if they disown you, its still right to take care of them. that is honor and duty to ones family and parents.

I have thought that if you feel bound to honor your parents and they don't deserve it, the best way to honor this commandment is to be the best "you" you can be.

It is good advice, LK. But unfortunate when being the best "you" isn't being your parent's version of the best "you".
BTW (sigh) I wasn't talking about myself, people. |
