We talk a lot about myths and metaphors. Do they effect us in any way? If so, in what way? Will there ever be a day we don't have myths and metaphors? Can we live without them?

Well, we CAN live without them. However, I believe in many myths, but not many metaphors.
I can't see myths affecting our society too much. People have believed in them for years, yet I don't see them being "annihalated" as of yet. Basically, Mytholgy is history, even though an exaggerated one. |

Myths are a part of our society and are a necessity. They allow us to explain things as well as transmit stories from the past, though like Soul said they are exaggerations. Even if we didn't have them we'd create them anyways.

Of course metaphors effect us, look at the Bible........it is full of metaphors. Whether or not people interpret the metaphors literally decides how it effects our culture
I do not think myths effect us as much. 1 of 3 things happens with myths, they are either proven, disproven, or disregarded. The difference between myths and metaphors is that metaphors can be taken and applied to each individual's life; myths are not.

There is an old adage circulating amongst comic fans that most likely within the next 2000 years many popular comic heroes and legends would someday replace are Zeus', Appolo's, Aphrodite's, Moses'. We will not witness this event in our lifetime but if Reincarnation is to be believed I can see myself definately attending a service at the Church Of Superman.

if you really wonder if myth and metaphore are important today, just look at our avatars.
We choose images from modern myths (in the form of cartoons/anime) like Patrick for Carrdero, Spike for Jewscout. Old myths such as the Jesus figure for cvipertooth and the Wizard for Soultype and my own Wolf. And you have the metaphorical for Lightkeepers lighthouse. Myth and metaphore are vital parts of human experiance, they bring us together and help us define our world and our values, as those things chance we invent new ones. wa:do |
