I would doubt the initial assumption that they are too far away to reach.
Current scientific speculation is that life may exist on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Certainly, if it existed, it would not be intelligent, in the sense that we understand, but there could still be life.
As for not having found life yet, we have only been searching with really crude methods for less than fifty years. As an analogy of what we have been doing, if we were looking for missing people in a forest, we would be on another continent, listening for their cries for help.
