Given the extreme punishment for not subscibing to Christanity --eternal damnation--as a person on the recieving end of the system I would be really uncomfortable walking into a courtoom that likened to Bibllical law as punishment. Espcially since the punishment for most crimes is death. Since the actual punishment for most crimes is not death in the US court system and since it is impossible to damn a fellow human to hell I don't see a purpose for the 10 commandments to be there.
It is a slap in the face for the concept of seperation of church and state to have them there and suggests that their is an unequal treatment under the law for non-christians than Christians. As symbolic as those laws may be they fall short of the literal laws needed to adminster the legal system and are not used courts or lawyers as defense or prosecution as guide to their legal process. The rhetoric contained in the 10 commandments contains specific commandments that are not even addressed by the legal system at all, specifically, 1) thou shall have no other god before me 2) command on having idols 3) taking lord's name in vain 5) honor your parents 10) covet niegbors things There is no literal need for the 10 commandements because it is not comprehensive enough to govern a legal system and the penalty ranges are not congruent with American courts There is no symbolic justification for its existance because of the seperation of church and state and because of the muti-faith system our Country hosts. |

LOL, If we were all penalised for not believing or following the 10 commandments, well, this world would be rather..imprisoned.
