Austin Kline writes an article from a quote in David Moats' book Civil Wars: A Battle for Gay Marriage, that deals with a reality that is "surely true for some" but not borne out in the actions of the Religious Right. Kilne quotes the story of the son of Sharon Underwood

My firstborn son started suffering at the hands of the moral little [bullies] from your moral, upright families from the time he was in the first grade. He was physically and verbally abused from first grade straight through high school because he was perceived to be gay....

....He never professed to be gay or had any association with anything gay, but he had the misfortune not to walk or have gestures like the other boys. He was called “fag” incessantly, starting when he was 6.

....You [the Religious Right] have the audacity to talk about protecting families and children from the homosexual menace, while you yourselves tear apart families and drive children to despair. I don’t know why my son is gay, but I do know that God didn’t put him, and millions like him, on this Earth to give you someone to abuse. God gave you brains so that you could think, and it’s about time you started doing that....

....If you [the Religious Right] want to tout your own morality, you’d best come up with something more substantive than your heterosexuality. You did nothing to earn it; it was given to you. ... You religious folk just can’t bear the thought that as my son emerges from the hell that was his childhood he might like to find a lifelong companion and have a measure of happiness. ... The deep-thinking author of a letter to the April 12 Valley News who lectures about homosexual sin and tells us about “those of us who have been blessed with the benefits of a religious upbringing” asks: “What ever happened to the idea of striving . . . to be better human beings than we are?”

Indeed, sir, what ever happened to that?

I see the hate in the language of the marrigae amendments where the semblence of marriage (rights that accrue to any couple) is anathma and has to be Constitutionally crushed. I see it in the exclusion of Children of God, equal in his eyes, from a full spiritual life with conservative religious faithful

Do you see why I call it homophobia?

My son has had to endure some of this treatment because he's the quintessential geek, is not robust but tall and very very thin, and DARES in this society not to give a darn about any of those all-important SPORTS! The very cheek!

I've never believe in the hate the sin but love the sinner thing. I've never met anyone who thought that way actually act on the loving the sinner. They choose to act on hating the sin. They choose hate. The cliché is a semantic joke.

Y'know, I understand the concept of "hate the sin, love the sinner" but the thing is, I cringe everytime I hear it, because I associate with those who say it most -- the people who use it to rationalize their own hateful acts.

How about let's just start with love the sinner.

I prefer to think of it not condoning bad behaviour, but understanding that as we *all* behave badly, we have no excuse to get too uppity about the person who made a mistake.

In conjunction with the part about removing the log from your own eye before worrying about the speck in your brother's, it doesn't turn out so bad, I think.
