Does evolution in fact go some way to demonstrating the non existence of God? Or does it reduce the need for God in some way?

I think it does neither; evolution is merely the process of 'growing' or 'subsiding' through changes; why should evolution add to or detract from the belief in God?

Evolution is a mechanism. I don't see how it relates to the existence of a Deity any more than any of the other mechanisms we see every day.

The teleological arguments are arguments "for the existence of God or a creator based on perceived evidence of order, purpose, design and/or direction in nature." (www.wikipedia.com)

I'm not saying I agree with teleology but there is certainly a huge amount of precedent for this way of thinking. Especially within Christianity.

Some people see evolution as an amazing mechanism by which God created humans without the need for sudden spontaneous creation (assuming abiogenesis is physically possible). I think Fluffy's questions are both valid and interesting.

I suspect it isn't evidence either way. The whole G-d business always seemed to me to rather defy evidence.

God is a rational manifestation of the imagination... anything can be attributed to God, so long as God is all-powerful. God neither requires proof or demonstration for those who believe in him.
