Is there an adequate definition of "religion" that fits everything from Christianity to Buddhism through Taoism and Shinto to native people's beliefs? If so, what is that definition?
Here's a partial list of the recognized religions that any single definition of religion would need to fit: Judaism Christianity Islam Hinduism Buddhism Confucianism Taoism Zen Shinto Native American Religions Ba'hai That's an incomplete list, but it does show something of the diversity of religious beliefs. So, will one definition do? If so, what is it? If not, how many definitions of religion are needed?

OF COURSE it can be defined!
And any word that CAN'T be defined is useless! I would suggest as a good starting point the classical dictionary definition of "re-connecting." Peace, Bruce |

Hmmm.
How about - Religion = any attempt by man to find reason in and/or behind the universe and discern man's place within it.

Yes, a figment of some ones imagination.
If there is a need for it, some one will provide it. Last edited by royol; 06-09-2006 at 04:47 PM. |

A collective attachement to something.
Attaching meaning is the first step to becoming religious.

A disciplined approach to living, thinking and viewing the world that raises one's existence above the ordinary or mundane.

I did not say that religion is for discipline, but that it is a discipline. Discipline in not a bad word. One can have a positive discipline, one that is not punitive or coercive. Perhaps you would prefer the word 'intentional' or 'organized?'
