I remember a discussion on this subject a while back. I must admit to not putting great stock in biblical prophecies or supposed genealogies as 'proof' of a divine messenger, though I'd certainly welcome further clarification on this Maitreya person.

Incidentally, I note that while he has stolen a Taoist symbol, we're not worth a mention on his front page. The cheek of it!

I don't put great stock in prophecies as proof as a divine messenger either. As I mentioned in some other post today, at most they provide a signpost, and then you have to examine the person's claims and character and see if it measures up.

Personally, I'd love to see him come back and explain what the Zoroastrian prophecy quoted on the Maitreya site:

“When a thousand two hundred and some years have passed from the inception of the religion of the Arabian and the overthrow of the kingdom of Iran and the degradation of the followers of My religion, a descendant of the Iranian kings will be raised up as a Prophet” (Zoroaster, Dinkird).

I know this prophecy, because I first ran across it in the bowels of the Kalamazoo Public Library, where I was doing some work in the stacks of books that are never checked out.

You know, last time I checked the Muslim calendar, it was in the 1300s, not the 1200s.

As for geneologies, they are only important if you can verify their accuracy. In our culture, this is well nigh impossible. In Middle Eastern cultures, it's not as difficult as you might think.

I wonder what his geneology is for being descended from Persian kings, which is a requirement for the Zoroastrian Shah Bahram. Too bad I can't find it, because I know a couple of people here in Atlanta (Persians, obviously) who do know enough to see if it's bunkum.

Now for those of you who don't know much about the Baha'i Faith, which is probably a lot of people, the "Greatest Name" is a calligraphic symbol we have that's like the Star of David is to Judaism, the Cross to Christians, etc etc.

And sure enough "Matreiya" quotes a Baha'i text (emphasis mine):

"Whoso layeth claim to a Revelation direct from God, ere the expiration of a full thousand years, such a man is assuredly a lying impostor. We pray God that He may graciously assist him to retract and repudiate such claim. Should he repent, God will, no doubt, forgive him. If, however, he persisteth in his error, God will, assuredly, send down one who will deal mercilessly with him. Terrible, indeed, is God in punishing! Whosoever interpreteth this verse otherwise than its obvious meaning is deprived of the Spirit of God and of His mercy which encompasseth all created things. Fear God, and follow not your idle fancies. Nay, rather follow the bidding of your Lord, the Almighty, the All-Wise" (Gleanings CLXVI).
Uh, is there any other way *you* can understand this passage? Like, it hasn't been 2 centuries yet, but he claims to be the next Messenger of God? Hm...which part of "1000 years" did he not understand?

The following Baha'i texts he quotes about the "west" have nothing to do with the next Manifestation of God (i.e. Prophet) and everything to do with just people living here and now.

Oh, it gets better. He quotes from a Tablet that I've never heard of, something about the "third resurrection." No such Tablet and no such quote -- sorry! This one he just made up and tucked in the middle of a bunch of legit (but not relevant) quotes, hoping no one would notice. sheesh!



If any of you want to verify this for yourself, I'll give you a link to Baha'i Writings where you can read the context.


Just for fun, howz about some of the Jews, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and whomever else whos prophecies are represented here go have a look and see what you find under your religion's heading?
