Default Indigo children have a dark side

I've been reading up on indigo children, and found something fascinating and scary, especially considering that many people have children because they think it's expected, but are not good parents. If they can mess up the old form of children, these new kids will be even worse for these people.

Quick definition of indigo children from a secular perspective: kids that are much smarter than average in at least one way, maybe even smarter than their parents; not prodigies, but just very brilliant in one area or more. They have a lot of energy, and they demand to be treated with the same kind of respect that is usually afforded adults. If you talk down to them or assume that they are stupid or ignorant because they are kids, they will disrespect you. Respect, honesty, caring, kindness, and a democratic voice in the family are what they require.

So here I go, about the dark side of indigos:

Indigos have a dark side. If they feel that their purpose in life (even if they don't consciously know what that purpose is) is being blocked or stopped, they will try to unblock it... but if they constantly fail to do so, they psychologically implode or explode very violently... either by committing suicide or by getting rid of what they percieve to be blocking them.

I believe this because of something I read about the Columbine killers, Harris and Klebold. They were said to be high-minded and idealistic, and hated racism, sexism, ageism, and similar isms and idiotic hatreds. Which made them about as likely to kill as Mahatma Ghandi or Martin Luther King Junior. I think they were Indigos. It would certainly explain how two exceptionally wise and caring children went on a rampage...

To start with, they were ignored by their parents... they were latch-key kids. They were constantly being bullied and no one seemed to care. Everywhere they turned their purpose was being blocked. So they snapped and went on a killing spree, which then turned into their suicide.

Ironically, I think they achieved their purpose, though I doubt their souls had it planned that way. By causing Columbine, they became a mirror showing our society to itself, and saying "We need to change this."

Wow, I agree. It is just very hard to see it explained from someone else, and their point of view. I believe that all the worst people in the world, were born with the highest goals. Someone like Jeffery Domer (or even Hitler.) I believe his purpose was one of greatness, however he was unable to overcome the horrors, or circumstance of his childhood, and fell victim to his 'dark side'.

I've never heard the term "indigo child" before. Where does this idea originate from?

I would say your description describes most, if not all children. In my first year as a teacher I was given the "dregs" (not my word) of the 3rd and 4th grade for my class. Many of these children were literally failing out of the system and were considered "below average". By the end of the school year, these children...every single one of them... had made up their deficiencies and were actually ahead of their grade peers. With the exception of one child, they all did the same or better than their peers, statewide, on the standardized tests. The one who didn't spent the several hours drawing in the little circles in what I thought was a random pattern. It wasn't until I was walking across the classroom and saw his paper from a distance that I realized he had colored in a Mickey Mouse head with ears. A child after my own heart.

I dislike the term "above" or "below" average because it implies that there is a "norm" and children are then pigeon holed as to where they fit in this setup. The system then tends to treat them in a certain way based on where they fit.

What do we use for criteria for brilliance? Academics? Lots of "average" students grow up to be business geniuses.

I'm not sure I believe in the "indigo child". Sounds like just one more way of making a group of people elitist.

All children deserve and need respect, honesty, caring and kindness. If you talk down to them or treat them as stupid, they will disrespect you.

As for being smarter than their parents? In what way? Most children believe they're smarter than their parents. Sometimes they are in one subject or another, but they aren't in life experience. It doesn't make them somehow less worthy...just not experienced.

My kids were definitely smarter in math and science than I am/was....but they aren't in everything.

I am proud to say that my two are smarter than I; and that is the greatest reward, in my book, for a parent.

Melody :- What is an Indigo Child? is a thread stated by EH about Indigo children.

Neither Marie nor I went to university (although a lot of that was circumstance) - but when I see my sons now -of course they aren't perfect, by any means, but I can feel that some of their success is perhaps due to the encouragement they received from their parents.

And Kat,

You could not expect indigi Children not to have a 'dark side' - although I would never call it that; more a propensity for doing evil, as well as good - Nothing on Earth is entirely good, nor is it ever entirely bad.

Michel,

Thank you for the link. I missed the original thread on "indigo" children.

I'm afraid I have to agree with those who believe this is just an attempt to pigeon hole a group of people who share similar personality traits in an attempt to make these people feel "special". Too sad that they don't see that they are already special without attaching some type of label to them.

I agree with every word you have said Melody. I think that this may be an effect of people thinking children are special (well, apprently not all children ) but not being able to give a reason why. Here is your reason: you are special because you are you.
