I think if you cut out the Love from all the Holy Books, you'd have a bound version of confetti.
Sadly the 'do not' is often emphasized over the 'do'. But if you look and weight the instances of Love being shared over Restrictions I think you'll find the scales tipped to one side. |

Religion started as an attempt to explain the unexplainable. It then graduated to an attempt to control aspects of their lives and environment. Controlling the members of the tribe was a way to ensure certain things happened. Religion is really one big cause and effect experiment. It was seen that people who eat pork get sick and die. Not all of them, but enough to be noticed. This observation led to the banning of pork. So the control aspect of this law is really medical rather than just creating random rules for the sake of being in control. When exploring religious laws it is important to try and understand the time period they were created in.

I've also heard this is beneficial when dealing with children, to try and phrase things in a positive way when trying to teach them. |

But how do you prepare for, say, something that can create a thunderstorm? How do you prepare against a being so powerful it cannot be seen and strikes down trees with bolts of lightning? You don't. No spear, arrow, or flint axe will help you against something that strong. So instead you try to appease it, hoping that it won't come after you then. And that's where the do's and don'ts come into play (as well as prayers, ceremonies, and whatnot). Obviously, such rules just beg for tyrants to appropriate them and use them to control the masses. |

True, but they came much later in the evolution of religion. As you pointed out, survival was the original basis and that mode lasted for thousands of years before the first tyrants of civilization emerged.

More or less I think religion is used more often for profit using controls attributed to a higher power or teaching as a medium to essentially get money. Not everybody, but a good number at least use control for monetary gain.

Nicely said. The only place I like 'negative' is in the apophatic approach to labeling God. |

Most religions that have lasted very long are communities and so there are laws of one sort of another... laws about marriages...laws about divorce...laws about purity ...laws about prayers.. There are also basic ethical teachings like telling the truth not backbiting and so on.
Sometimes the original "elan" gets lost in the laws and people get lost in the laws and ordinances and forget the spiritual part of the religion. |
