Let us look at the verses:
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me,[a] "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication." 3So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.[b] 5And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement. Rev 17:1-6 This is the parable that looks into the idea of the harlot of Babylon. vs 6 helps us pin point exactly what she is. She is not a literal figure that drinks blood but is figurative. vs7-18 explains what this parable means and if looking into from a historical sense the meaning becomes clear: The harlot is Rome. vs 18: "and the woman whom you saw is that great city that reigns over the kings of the earth" The city, during the fall of the Empire, was refered to as a whore in various surviving historical accounts. Chapter 18 outlines the collapse of the Roman Empire and the city of Rome. Studying the circumstances and events surrounding the splintering of the Roman Empire makes these chapters' meanings obvious. |

Quote:
Rev.11:[8] And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. |

The harlot is the empire of false religion.
In Revelation 18:9 it says how "the Kings of the earth" are mourning her loss, and then it tells us in revelation 9:11 that the merchants are also mourning her loss. so therefore Babylon the Great (who is the Harlot) is not political or commercial, so what major empire does that leave on this earth? Religious and both the commercial and political scenes are in with religion. |

This is not an attempt to make a definitive statement,.. but a few observations..
I note that Iraq, the land of the biblical Babylon has been for the last 5 years and still is the epicenter of the most violence and inhumane happenings on planet earth. I also note that prior to the invasion of Iraq by the coalition forces, the then Sec. of State Colin Powell warned President Bush,.."if you break it, you own it",...and in a way it has come to pass. Some observers see in biblical world history, a movement ( in time and place) of Kingship from Babylon, to Persia/Medes, to Greeks (four separate kingdoms), then to Rome. These represent the seven heads of the beast of Revelation (and the heads of the beasts of Daniel). Then lastly will emerge an eighth king who is one of the seven? The serpent swallowing its own tail (Ouroboros) is symbolic of this kingship returning to its origins.

Anything that takes us away from God. If you don't go to church because you want to work on your car, then you car is the whore of Babylon. If you want to go fishing rather than go to church, then fishing is the Whore of Babylon. If you would reather have sex with your bf/gf/fiance/fiancee rather than keep the commandment to remain chaste before marriage then that sexual relatioinship is the whore of Babylon. Anything that leads us away from God is the whore of Babylon.
