"SAN JUAN, Texas – A satanic scare is sweeping the Rio Grande Valley – at least according to school officials and counselors who warn that devil worshippers are snatching children and cutting up their bodies."
The whole article makes me roll my eyes and want to smash my head against the desk, and I'm not even a Satanist. How do Satanists react to stuff like this? Do you guys view this as a modern-day witch hunt? |

I have an insider's persepctive on this. The "vally" which is what the locals call it down here is about 80-100 % hispanic from town to town. Many of the inhabitants of those small towns are 1st and 2nd generation imigrants from Mexico. The religion of choice is christian with a heavy lean towards catholism and jehovah's witness. Many of them in addition to believing in God, believe in the devil good magic bad magic and other superstitions. Overall they are a very supersticious culture. The culture is very close knit largely resistant to outsiders. Few of them in their lifetimes will leave the town they migrated to, will live in a non-hispanic society, will pursue higher education, read about science or make a large attempt to americanize themselves. The smaller towns are almost like being in Mexico instead of America and the people are culturally cut off. At my part time job there is a guy there who is from the valley. He is at least 2nd or 3rd generation and his english is perfect but I remember one time somebody mentioning Satan and his eyes got really big and he said he didn't want to talk about this. At other jobs in the past, only a few times, I have seen similar reactions in other hispanics in the past....many of those recently from Mexico have a very real fear of a red fella with hooves and horns who comes for their souls. The valley has a large percentage of immigrants.
